Does the business have to stop while this happens?
No. Modernisation runs incrementally — the legacy system keeps serving traffic while functionality moves across behind a routing layer, one capability at a time, with the ability to send traffic back if a slice misbehaves.
Rewrite or refactor?
Refactor by default. A full rewrite trades a system with known bugs for one with unknown bugs, and usually costs more than the estimate. We recommend a rewrite only where the platform itself is unsupported or unhirable.
What if the original developers are long gone?
Common, and manageable. We reconstruct behaviour from the running system, the database, and the tests that do exist, then write down what we learn as we go — so the documentation gap closes as a side effect of the work.
How do you prove nothing broke?
Characterisation tests captured from the legacy system before anything moves, then run against the new one. Where behaviour genuinely changes, it changes because someone decided it should, and it is listed.
